The Heritage Center was created in partnership with residents and preserves photographs and oral histories from West Winter Park. That community-centered approach makes it especially useful for families who want children to understand that local history is carried by people and neighborhoods, not only by famous landmarks.

Give the west side time before moving to Park Avenue

It can be tempting to treat Hannibal Square as a quick stop on the way to Winter Park’s better-known shopping district. A better approach is to spend enough time with the collection to understand how segregation shaped the city and how the west-side community built institutions and traditions of its own.

The Heritage Center also offers information about the surrounding neighborhood and, at times, guided walking experiences. Even without a formal tour, walking nearby streets can help visitors see how historic neighborhoods evolve while still carrying traces of earlier community life.
